Purloined Grapefruit
At the end of my street is a house with a grapefruit tree. All last year, I watched the ripe fruit drop and roll down our steep hill, bruised, neglected and unwanted, until it stopped who knows where. Apparently, the owners are not grapefruit lovers like me.
So, this week while I was chasing my AWOL Cora all over the neighborhood, I saw one of those lovely grapefruits in the gutter and I picked it up.
Thus begins my life of crime. I didn't knock to find out if they wanted it. I didn't ask any of the neighbors. I just took it home, cut it in half, sectioned it with my mother's sublime grapefruit knife and enjoyed every guilty bite. I didn't add anything - it was perfect as it came. It was tart and tangy and oh, so delicious, even with a bruise on its little round bottom.
Next time my dog takes it on the lam, I'm going to look for more illicit fruit. I might ask if those neighbors are out in the yard but otherwise I'll just liberate it. I've become a leathery, hardened grapefruit thief.

Oh boy, you're on the slippery slope but I don't blame you one bit. I love grapefruit myself and am not as fortunate as you in having a tree laden with fruit that I can liberate! In fact, don't think of yourself as a thief. Think of yourself as a Grapefruit Liberation Fruit.
If you ask, you might get more. Leave a note.
Nancy, my, but you are kind! :-)
Cookiecrumb, luckily, I have you for my conscience. I will ask.
Nancy the fumble fingered typist - I meant _ Zoomie, the Grapefruit Liberation FRONT! Something new to add to to your resume.
Nancy, we revolutionaries in the GLF thank you for the name! :-) Power to the People!
Cookiecrumb, had to return to tell you that I followed your advice and my neighbor just emailed me to pick all I want! Do you want some grapefruits? :-)
I would like some grapefruit. I was thinking about buying a tree. I love those Texas Ruby fruits. You think I could Californiaize it.
Chilebrown, These are white grapefruit, very tart, and may need a spoonful of sugar if you like the ruby ones best... I know you'll be away this next weekend at the cook off, but let me know when you're back and we can arrange a meeting to give you some.
Hey Zoomie, If you have any left next Friday, Maybe we could meet at Catahoula's. That is my new hangout. I have a fancy new toy. It is a laptop. I sit around and drink coffee with all the unemployed beautiful people.
Chilebrown, I'd like that - can I bring my dog? If it's nice weather, we can sit outside.
