Love/Hate
There seems to be no middle ground about this dinner - you either love it or hate it. Calves liver, lightly sautéed, sweet onions and, of course, bacon. We don't have this often but, every now and then, we are in the mood.
What's your take on liver and onions? Love it? Hate it?
If you hate it, how long has it been since you tried it? I have found that many foods that turned me off as a child are favorites now. There actually is something to be said for aging - it opens the mind to try things - what the heck, it's just another meal. If you still hate it, you don't ever have to try it again.
We loved it.

Why ruin perfectly good bacon with yuck.
Lol! I must agree with Chilebrown.
Liver and onions so horrified me as a child that I haven't had the nerve to try it again as an adult.
No likee. Not only the funky taste, but the idea that a liver is a body's filter for toxins. I'm sure it's safe, not trying to scare you.
Onions, I like!
Chilebrown, I'm surprised at this from you, but to each his own...
Greg, another vote for no liver!
Yesteryum, I used to hate it, too - because my mother cooked the hell out of it. Now, I like it, when it's properly cooked.
Cookiecrumb, no paté for you either? Oh, sad, sad.
I think you were out numbered for a good reason.81 36
81 36 means nothing but your code to make a comment. It may mean in secret code that your meat sucks and smells bad.
Chilebrown, I can see that I'm not going to convince any of you of the virtues of eating liver. Oh, well...
Of course I eat pate. I just avoid the livers of large mammals.
I just have a hard time with "organs" the idea just sorta creeps me out, like wild animals or vampires. The Darling Rebecca though loves liver and onions but she likes sweetbreads too. Cheers and good eats! Is someone playing an organ?
I have tried to like liver. My grandmother, who was a fabulous cook, soaked it in milk and sauteed it lightly, making gravy with onions and stock and more milk in a separate pan. But I just could not stomach the taste. I'm the same way with oysters and clams - just can't do it. But I like sweetbreads, prepared MY way - lightly cooked and in warm salad with a vinaigrette. For me, sweetbreads need that extra punch of lemon or vinegar.
But liver - sorry. No can do.
Cookiecrumb, I'm that way with kidneys - just can't face them. Aren't humans funny?
Toons, I can eat sweetbreads if I don't think too much about it... :-)
Nancy, at least you have tried all those things and know you don't care for them. I like oysters and clams cooked but can't face either raw.
I recommend a new book by my friend, Stephanie V. W. Lucianovic, on the science and humor of picky eaters. It's called Suffering Succotash.
Cookiecrumb, you're the second person to recommend that book to me. I'll look for it once I have worked my way through the thigh-high stack on my bedside table. Thanks.
