After The Fair
When we left the fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, a little footweary and sunburned after trekking all over the place for a few hours, we fetched up at a favorite eatery in that town, Rosso.
We took a table in the dappled, late afternoon shade on their outdoor patio, ordered one of their fizzy lemonades, and began to think about dinner.
My Beloved was already pretty hungry, so he ordered this to share - soft, fresh goat cheese with preserved lemon and lemon-infused oil, surrounded by a heaping handful of roasted garlic cloves and served with an order of herbed flatbread. Simply lovely, the cheese was creamy and the garlic was sweet.
Every time we go to Rosso we are impressed with the service and the excellence of the food. The restaurant was virtually empty when we arrived and I had a sad thought that perhaps they weren't thriving. By the time we left, however, almost every table was full and the air buzzed with excited conversations - clearly, they are doing just fine. And so they should - it's a marvelous place. Next time you are in Santa Rosa, do yourself a favor.

I am so stealing that roasted garlic/cheese idea! Mmmmmm!~
Okay, that's #2 on the list for Santa Rosa. #1 is the Willie Bird restaurant, gotta score me a hot turkey sammich!
Biggles
biggles: your blog is blank. why?
OK, I got the dog off my lap; can now type with two hands.
That's a great little appetizer, Zoomie. Totally something we can do at home. All that melty garlic!
Don't forget the flatbread - it was delicious - chewy and very, very thin.
Biggles, how's about turkey for lunch and Rosso for dinner?
Cookiecrumb, It was killer - gotta learn how to do that garlic. It was spreadable and sweet. And the preserved lemon and lemon oil mixed in with the cheese was terrific, too.
There is a local lemon oil, made by O.
I wouldn't use it, though. Too piercing. I think you'd get a nice effect from the preserved lemon alone.
And the garlic. Hm. Might have been simmered in oil.
Would be fun to see what the average homemaker comes up with. And we're not average!
Cookiecrumb, the oil that Rosso used was not piercing at all - mellow and lemony. I'll have to ask them what it was - or maybe just return to reward them with my business. :-)
Yum. I love fizzy lemonade and thinking about this goat cheese w/ preserved lemon, roasted garlic and flatbread is making me quite hungry. I think it's time for dinner.
Denise, well, then get thee up to Santa Rosa and enjoy! Rosso really is a "find."
